Randy Guzior scored an extra-attacker goal in with 25.8 seconds to go in the third period and Steve Quailer scored at 3:55 in overtime to lift Northeastern to a 2-1 win at Matthews Arena on Friday night. BC's Brock Bradford scored at 7:41 in the first period and the Eagles led for most of the game. Goaltender Brad Thiessen made 22 saves for his 23rd win while John Muse made 30 stops for the Eagles.
Northeastern improved to 23-8-4 overall and 18-5-3 in Hockey East, maintaining its one-point lead over Boston University in the Hockey East standings with one game to go. The Terriers ripped Providence, 8-2, on the road. Boston College fell to 15-13-5 overall and 10-11-5 in Hockey East with the loss.
Down, 1-0, in the final minute of the third period, Northeastern pulled Thiessen for the extra attacker. Ryan Ginand got the puck deep in the defensive zone and took it all the way up the ice. He dished a pass to Guzior on his right and Guzior ripped a one-timer into the corner on Muse's glove side to even the game at 1-1 with 25.8 seconds to go.
Late in overtime, Wade MacLeod had the puck beyond the goal line and sent it in front of the net, where Joe Vitale sticked it to Quailer in front. Quailer put it in the net to lift the Huskies to victory at 3:55 in overtime.
Boston College scored the only goal of the first period off the stick of Bradford. Just after a five-on-three ended, Tim Kunes passed the puck from the center point to Bradford at the top of the left circle and Bradford shot it into the corner of the net at 7:41, giving the Eagles the lead.
The Huskies had some chances in the first, including a MacLeod shot off the post down low, but the Eagles outshot NU 12-7 in the first.
The Huskies controlled most of the scoring chances in the second period, outshooting the Eagles 11-7, but NU couldn't find the back of the net. At the end of the second, Greg Costa, Guzior and Ginand fired quick shots on net.
The victory was Northeastern's second overtime win of the season. It was Quailer's first career game-winning goal. Thiessen extended his NU record for wins in a season to 22 and has allowed just five goals over the last five games, posting a 0.96 goals against average and .962 save percentage over that span.
The teams rematch on Saturday at Conte Forum at 7 p.m. It will be the final regular season game for both teams, and with a win the Huskies can clinch their first-ever Hockey East regular season championship. The game will be broadcast on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio.
