Northeastern falls to Boston College

Defenseman David Strathman scored the first goal of the game on a power play but Boston College scored the next four en route to a 4-1 Eagle win at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill on Saturday. Brock Bradford scored the game-winner and had two assists for BC.
With the loss, fourth-ranked Northeastern is 23-9-4 overall and 18-6-3 in Hockey East. Northeastern has a one-point lead over Boston University in the Hockey East standings, with the Terriers playing their final game against Providence on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Agganis Arena. Northeastern will win the Hockey East regular season title if the Terriers lose. No. 20 Boston College improved to 16-13-2 overall and 11-11-5 in Hockey East with the win, finishing sixth in the Hockey East standings.
Strathman lit the lamp for the first goal of the game just after a five-on-three began. BC's Benn Ferriero was sent to the penalty box for slashing, Joe Vitale won the ensuing faceoff back to Wade MacLeod. MacLeod passed it from the right point to Strathman on the left and Strathman one-timed it behind BC goaltender John Muse to make it 1-0 at 9:12 in the first period, just four seconds after the power play began. It was the defenseman's second goal of the season.
The Eagles came back with a power-play goal of their own at 13:02 in the first period. Cam Atkinson took a feed from Bradford near the goal line on the right side and fired a shot just under the crossbar to even the score at 1-1.
Northeastern's penalty kill weathered a five-minute major on Chris Donovan from 2:33-7:33 and Thiessen made eight saves in the first period.
Boston College took control in the second, scoring three goals while outshooting Northeastern 13-4. Bradford potted the first Eagle goal from the left circle when he one-timed a Tim Kunes pass to the far side of the net at 1:20. Jimmy Hayes made it 3-1 when he shot the puck from the right side on the goal line and found space between Husky goaltender Brad Thiessen and the post at 13:31. At 14:47 in the second period, Benn Ferriero scored on a one-timer from Bradford to make it 3-1.
The Huskies had some good scoring chances in the second. Mike McLaughlin stole the puck near the BC net and tried to backhand a shot but Muse made the save. Dennis McCauley had a breakaway shot that Muse saved and, shortly after, Randy Guzior had a breakaway but fanned left.
Northeastern outshot Boston College, 16-3, in the third period but couldn't get anything past Muse. McLaughlin hit the post on a pass from J.P. Maley for the Huskies' best scoring chance. BC's Nick Petrecki took a five-minute major for hitting from behind at 6:22 in the third but the Huskies couldn't score. NU took eight power-play shots in the third period.
Thiessen made 21 saves in the game while Muse made 24. The Eagles went 3-for-6 on power plays while Northeastern went 1-for-10.
Northeastern will host a Hockey East Quarterfinal series at Matthews Arena next weekend. The best-of-three series will run Friday, Saturday and Sunday with all game starting at 7 p.m. All three games will be broadcast live on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio.
