Bob Saunders is in his 10th season on the Northeastern hockey staff in the role of administrative assistant for external affairs. He is in his second stint with Northeastern hockey, as he served as goaltenders coach from 1989-93.
Prior to his first run as a coach at Northeastern, Saunders was on the staff at Rensselaer for 11 years with head coach Mike Addesa, including RPI’s NCAA Championship season of 1984-85.
A 1961 NU graduate, Saunders earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He has been a part of the New England ice hockey community nearly all his life, competing on several amateur teams in his playing days before entering the collegiate coaching ranks as an assistant at Holy Cross in 1973. Saunders has coached at every level, including a stretch from 1994-97 on the staff of former Husky assistant Paul Cannata when he was head coach at UMass Boston.
In 1998, Saunders was given the American Hockey Coaches Association’s Terry Flanagan Award for lifetime achievement. The prestigious award honored him for his experience with so many different individual programs and for his contributions to the development of national coaching clinics. Saunders was given the Friends of NU Hockey Ferny Flaman Award for dedication and commitment to NU hockey in 2001.
Saunders lives in Randolph with his wife, Geraldine.
