Oarsmen invited to U.S. National Team Camps
May 20, 2009
Boston, Mass.

Five Husky rowers, junior Brad Bertoldo, sophomore Mike Iannazzo, and graduates Bill Benjamin (Class of ’08), Will Miller (’07) and Dan Walsh (’02), have been invited to U.S. National Team Selection Camps this summer.

Current teammates Brad Bertoldo and Mike Iannazzo are two of 25 collegiate rowers selected to attend the Under 23 National Team Selection Camp this summer in Oklahoma City. The camp will select the men’s eight, four and quadruple sculls crews that will compete at the 2009 FISA World Rowing Under 23 Championships July 23-26 in Racice, Czech Republic.

Bertoldo, a native of San Jose, Calif., currently rows in the 5 seat in Northeastern’s varsity boat. Last year he was selected as the Most Improved Oarsman, and in 2007 he won the Parker Award for Outstanding Freshman. Before coming to NU, Bertoldo rowed four years at Bellermine College Prep and was named to the CanAmMex Junior team and attended the CSUS Development Camp in 2005.

Iannazzo, of Salisbury, Mass., currently rows the 5 seat in the 2nd varsity boat, which he also rowed last year in the freshman boat. Before coming to Northeastern, Iannazzo rowed for four years at Brooks School, serving as captain for one year and was voted team MVP.

Former Huskies Bill Benjamin and Will Miller have been invited to the Senior 4x (“Quad”) selection camp.

Benjamin, a native West Palm Beach, Fla., rowed the 5 and 6 seats and stroked the varsity boat at Northeastern after transferring from North Florida College. He was selected as the Most Improved Oarsman in 2007.

Miller, who came to Northeastern from Duxbury, Mass., rowed the 5, 7 and bow seats as well as stroking the varsity boat at NU. He captained the team in 2006 and was named Most Improved Oarsman in 2004.

This is the first National Team invitation for these oarsmen.

2002 grad Dan Walsh, of Norwalk, Conn., has been invited to the Senior 4- (“straight four”) selection camp. A member of the national rowing team from 2001-08, Walsh took third at the 2006 World Championships and received bronze as a member of the 2008 Olympic team. He also made the U.S. Junior National Team in 1997. As a Husky, Walsh rowed the 5, 6 and 7 seats and stroked the varsity boat while winning the Parker Award for best freshman and Most Outstanding Oarsman Award as a sophomore. He will be inducted into the Northeastern University Hall of Fame this year.

If they make the team, Benjamin, Miller and Walsh will compete at the 2009 World Rowing Championship in Poznan, Poland August 23-30.
