Huskies advance to CAA semifinals

Matt Pentkowski got the game-winner in the penalty shootout as the Huskies advanced to the semifinals over Old Dominion to face UNC Wilmington on Friday at 5 p.m. The two teams played to a 0-0 tie and the Huskies won with a 5-4 advantage in PK’s.
The two teams played a scoreless first half as both offenses struggled to get many good scoring chances. Old Dominion had the game’s first near score when Steffen Rabben crossed the ball into the box to Trent Reid. The play was broken up by the Northeastern defense. The Monarchs had another great chance stopped when Scott Partridge made a diving save on a header from Nane Joseph off a corner kick. Partridge made five saves in the match and recorded his ninth shutout of the season, which leads the CAA and ties a Husky record.
The second half was much of the same as both offenses failed to find the back of the net. Both defenses played physical and stopped every attack that came into the box. Old Dominion lost midfielder Harris Cekic 66:21 to an apparent ankle injury. Both goalkeepers made four saves in regulation as the teams went into the extra periods tied 0-0. Northeastern held a slight advantage in shots, 11-10. Partridge made five saves in the match before the penalty shootout.
The game went into penalty kicks after both teams only got off two shots total. In the penalty kicks, the Huskies were down to their final shot as captain Brendan Ennis came up to shoot. He finessed a shot in the left corner just out of the reach to force sudden death. The next shot was saved by Partridge and Pentkowski netted the following shot to advance the Huskies to the CAA Seminfinals.
Northeastern will travel to UNC Wilmington for a 5 p.m. match on Friday in the semifinals.
