Northeastern played to a 0-0 tie in regulation and won on PK’s 5-3 in the CAA semifinals Friday night at Wilmington, N.C. Brendan Ennis scored the game-winner in the penalty shootout as the Huskies have now won both their tournament matches in penalty shootouts. Northeastern beat Old Dominion Tuesday night 5-4 in the shootout.

The Huskies’ defense shined once again as keeper Scott Partridge continued his historic season for the Huskies by making nine saves to record his CAA-leading 10th shutout of the season. Partridge now holds the Northeastern record for shutouts in a single-season.

The Seahawks held possession for most of the first half as they were able to get off seven shots to the Huskies three. Kennedy had two chances to score, but came up empty. UNCW had several chances on free kicks, but the Northeastern defense was able to keep the Seahawks off the scoreboard. Senior midfielder Will Friesinger had the best chance for the Seahawks when he fired a shot from 30 yards out the just missed the top of the net. Goalkeeper Partridge made four saves in the half.

The pace of the game picked up in the second half as the Huskies put some pressure on the Seahawks. Matthew Laning had two opportunities in the half, but hit the crossbar with one shot and had a goal called back on another. UNCW had a chance to score early when Daniel Roberts kicked a corner kick to Shawn Gudererian. Guderian headed the ball just wide of the post. The Huskies played the final ten minutes down a player when Petur Vidarsson tackled Guderian from behind to earn a red card. Northeastern was still able to stay even in shots as both teams had six shots in the half.

The Huskies nearly won the game with fifteen seconds left in the first overtime when Kennedy received a pass from Lars Okland. Kennedy made a couple moves and got a clear shot from 15 yards out but shot it right at the keeper Brock Duckworth who made the save. UNCW out shot the Huskies 2-1 in the first overtime.

The two teams played an even second overtime period as both teams had a chance to win the game. UNCW had the first two chances as Heiland took a free kick from 30 yards out and missed two charging Seahawks as the ball went out of bounds. Two minutes later, the Seahawks’ Kirk Hudgins fired a shot from the top of the box that Partridge made a diving save on. The Huskies then had an opportunity when Okland led Kennedy into the box, but keeper Duckworth made a tremendous charging save to preserve the shutout.

The Huskies proved to be the stronger team in penalty kicks for the second game in a row as they made all five shot, capped off with Ennis’ game-winner. UNCW’s Indy Smith made the only mistake in the shootout when he fired a shot over the net.

The Northeastern Huskies will play next in the CAA Finals against George Mason. The game will be in Wilmington, N.C. on Sunday at 1 p.m.
