For the first time since joining the CAA, Northeastern is 2-0 to open conference play. After scoring just two goals in their first six matches, the Huskies have scored four in their last two, notching twin 2-0 victories over Georgia State and Hofstra.
Wednesday, the Huskies defeated the Hofstra Pride on a windy night in Hempstead, N.Y. and advanced to 3-5-0 (2-0-0 CAA) on the season. Despite the Pride's 4-4-0 (2-0-0) record entering the match, it was Northeastern who earned the win.
In just the seventh minute, Northeastern junior midfielder Nick Lueders launched a long ball that found freshman Don Anding. With Hofstra goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone attempting to play the ball 30 yards out, Anding toed the ball past him and beat defender Thomas Bekas for his first collegiate goal.
With just 3:50 remaining in the first half, the Huskies added an insurance goal as a Santiago Bedoya cross found the head of Nick Lueders for his second tally of the season.
Although the Pride had some chances in the first half, the Northeastern defense held them off in the second and secured the 2-0 victory.
Senior goalkeeper Scott Partridge earned his second consecutive shutout in the win. He has a .29 GAA in 315 minutes this season.
"It's a big win for us on the road," said Huskies head coach Brian Ainscough. "The defense came up huge tonight with another clean sheet."
Last season, the Huskies were 5-2-4 in conference play and advanced all the way to the CAA championship game.
Saturday, conference play continues as Northeastern heads south to face UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m.
