The Huskies defeated Towson 2-0 today at Parsons Field to improve to
3-1-0 in CAA competition. Reigning CAA Rookie of the Week, Don Anding,
netted his second goal of the season off of an Andre Ciliotta assist.
Nick Lueders became the team's leading scorer as he clinched the game
with a second goal on a cross from Mike Kennedy.
The first half was quiet at Parsons as the teams played the ball back and forth in the middle and had few real opportunities. The best chance of the half came as Mike Kennedy found a lane on the right side of the box and fired a shot that was saved by Towson keeper John Steele.
Although the game remained scoreless at the half, the Huskies came out firing in the second. Just eight minutes into the frame, freshman standout Andre Ciliotta dribbled through several Tigers' defenders and slipped into the box. A quick back-pass found Don Anding ten yards out and Anding fired a laser high into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
Anding, who was named CAA Rookie of the Week on Monday, fired off a remarkable eight shots in the match while the Tigers shot just seven.
Northeastern continued the constant attack and just five minutes after Anding's goal, Nick Lueders found the net for his third of the season. The goal came as a perfect cross from Mike Kennedy found Lueders on the back post. Towson had no chance to stop Lueders' header and the Huskies took the 2-0 lead. Lueders now leads the team in goals scored and points with three and seven respectively.
NU controlled play for the rest of the half but didn't score again and the match ended with a 2-0 final score.
Senior goalkeeper Scott Partridge earned his third shutout of the
season, making two saves in the win. Partridge was also an integral
part of the Huskies' defense, repeatedly leaving the box to thwart the
Tigers' attempts.
It was another remarkable game for the younger members of the squad. The freshmen combination of Ciliotta and Anding that netted the game-winner continues to produce for the Huskies in CAA competition. The two have combined for four goals and three assists since Northeastern began conference play. Although it was Anding with the goal, Ciliotta created numerous opportunities for as he streaked through the Towson defense.
"Earning a clean sheet against a team that has scored 20 goals this season shows how good Scotty [Partridge] and our defense were today." said Huskies head coach Brian Ainscough. "...But i'd have to say Andre Ciliotta was the man of the match."
The win improves the Huskies to 4-6-0 (3-1-0 CAA). Since conference play began, NU has scored eight goals while allowing just three.
Next Saturday, CAA play will continue as the team heads to Fairfax, Va. to battle with George Mason at 7 p.m.
