The Huskies downed CAA opponent Drexel, 4-0 at Parsons Field Wednesday to improve to 5-1-0 in conference play. The loss drops the dragons to 1-4-1 in CAA competition.
Northeastern wasted no time staking its claim on Wednesday's game, scoring in just the fifth minute. The goal came as Mike Kennedy streaked down the right sideline and crossed a ball toward the far post. Nick Lueders laced the ball in from just a couple of yards out for his team-leading fourth goal on the season. The assist for Kennedy was just the beginning of a big day.
The Huskies controlled the tempo as the period continued, keeping the ball in the Dragon's end for most of the half. In the 23rd minute, Kennedy found the ball in the box once again and flicked one right to the head of freshman Andre Ciliotta. Ciliotta laid it in past Drexel keeper Tres Heffron for his third tally on the season.
Pressure continued from Northeastern as the first half played on. In the 29th minute Kennedy saw another chance and rocketed a shot of his own that deflected off the post. The Dragons would keep the Huskies scoreless until the halftime whistle but would not score themselves.
The pace of the game slowed in the second half as Drexel was able to calm the Northeastern attack. But the Huskies weren't finished and they struck again in the 70th minute. Team captain Lars Okland ripped a shot at the Drexel net that was saved by Heffron. Heffron couldn't hold on to the ball, however, and Don Anding punched in the rebound to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead.
Just one minute after Drexel substituted keeper Tim Washam for Heffron in the 79th minute, Ciliotta cleared a free ball out from the Huskies end right to a streaking Kennedy. On the breakaway, Kennedy approached Washam and slid the ball to his left for his third goal on the season and his third and fourth points on the game. Solid defense held the Dragons scoreless as the game ended with a 4-0 final score.
"We haven't got just one player who's taking all the chances," said Huskies head coach Brian Ainscough, "and that makes us very hard to play against. Everyone contributed today."
Reigning CAA Player of the Week, Scott Partridge, was perfect in net once again, stopping three shots on his way to his fifth shutout of the season. Since becoming the Huskies everyday keeper when CAA play began, Partridge is 5-1-0 with five shutouts. His .53 GAA leads the conference.
In their next match, the Huskies will host Old Dominion Saturday at 6 p.m. at Parsons Field. The game will be a rematch of last year's CAA Quarterfinal which saw the Huskies walk away with a victory in penalty kicks.
