The men's soccer team took its fourth straight match by way of shutout today as the Huskies defeated the Old Dominion Monarchs, 3-0. The win improves the Huskies to 6-1-0 in the CAA but drops the Monarchs to 3-3-2.
After defeating Drexel 4-0 last Wednesday, Northeastern carried its offensive momentum into Saturday's contest. In the second straight match where NU has scored the game-winner in the first ten minutes, it was Don Anding who secured the victory. In the eighth minute, Santiago Bedoya played the ball down the left sideline and crossed it to Andre Ciliotta in the box. Ciliotta headed the ball in the air towards Anding, who let it bounce once before he ripped his fourth of the season past ODU's Evan Newton.
Just three minutes later, Ciliotta earned his second assist of the match as he dumped the ball to Matt Laning in the corner. Laning beat one defender down the baseline before rifling a shot towards the net. Despite the impossible angle, Laning earned his first goal of the season. Originally slotted as a forward, Laning has played most of the season on defense just as he did on Saturday. His presence up front seemed to catch ODU off-guard and he was able to give the Huskies the 2-0 lead.
In another impressive show of Northeastern defense, the team held the Monarchs to just four shots in the first half. The midfield, led by captain Lars Okland, was equally as impressive in the match, aiding both the offensive and defensive efforts.
As the second half began, the Huskies continued the attack. Just four minutes into the frame Nick Lueders dished the ball to Josh Semerene around midfield. Semerene dribbled to about the twenty yard mark before firing an incredible laser just over the head of Newton. For Semerene, it was his first on the season. The great defense would continue from the Huskies and the clock ran out without a goal from Old Dominion. In all, the Monarchs mustered just 2 shots on goal, both were saved by Scott Partridge.
Partridge earned his fourth straight shutout and sixth on the season in the win. He entered the game leading the CAA in GAA (.52) and was trailed by his opponent, ODU's Newton (.66). For Northeastern, it was the teams seventh shutout of the season as freshman keeper Michael Gallagher earned one of his own in a 1-0 win over Albany. Each of NU's seven victories have come by way of shutout.
"We have the advantage of having a number of different players who can score goals," said Huskies head coach Brian Ainscough. "It's great to have Matt Laning making runs out of the backfield. Teams don't expect defenders to be able to make those plays."
The 6-1-0 (CAA) Huskies are now perched near the top of the CAA. In their next match, the Huskies will travel to Newark, Del. to battle the Blue Hens Wednesday at 3 p.m.
