The men's soccer team defeated the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams at Parsons Field on Saturday, 3-2. The win improves NU to 9-7-1 (8-2-1 CAA) and breaks a Huskies record for conference victories.
Northeastern was dominant in the first half as they out-shot VCU, 10-1. Don Anding wasted no time getting the Huskies on the board as he put one past Rams' keeper Gabriel Rodriguez just five minutes into the match. He was assisted by Lars Okland and Mike Kennedy who each one-touched perfect through-balls to set up the score.
For the rest of the half, it was the defense that controlled the pace of the game. Matt Sanford, Santiago Bedoya, Matt Laning, and Lars Okland dealt with Rams' chances perfectly and did not allow a single shot on goal. The offense had numerous chances including three more shots on net, but were unable to add to the lead.
The second half saw an impressive VCU team take the field. Held to just the one shot in the first half, the Rams outshot the Huskies 10-8 in the second frame.
Of those eight Husky shots, two were put on net and each was a goal. Just nine minutes into the period, Anding earned his third point of the match as he fed Nick Lueders on a give and go and Lueders converted the chance for his fifth tally of the year.
The Rams would get on the board in the 78th minute as C.J. Gehin-Scott assisted Philipp Daldrup's fourth goal on the season. Just four minutes later, the Huskies answered back as Josh Danesh led Josh Semerene into the box and Semerene beat the new Rams goalkeeper Jackson Van Arsdale.
VCU added one more goal as Carlos Picado picked up a Owusu Seykere pass and beat Michael Gallagher who had entered the match for Scott Partridge. With that goal coming in the 88th minute, VCU did not have enough time to even the score and the Huskies took home a victory.
Before the match, a brief ceremony honored four Huskies seniors who were playing in the last regular-season game of their careers. Lars Okland, Scott Partridge, Matt Laning, and Konrad Stefanek were praised for their dedication and hard work over their four years with the Huskies.
"We have been lucky enough to have these four talented athletes with us over the past few years," said Huskies head coach Brian Ainscough. "They're a tremendous group and they'll be missed in the years ahead."
The win improves NU to 9-7-1 (8-2-1 CAA) and breaks a Huskies record for conference victories. They will enter next weekend's CAA tournament as the third seed and will battle the William and Mary Tribe in Friday's semifinal.
