Adam Carpenter, a 2000 graduate of Northeastern University, is in his first season as assistant coach of the Northeastern men’s and women’s track & field teams. Carpenter has spent the past five years as a teacher and assistant track coach at Newton North High School.
From 1996-2000 at Northeastern, Carpenter became one of the most accomplished Huskies jumpers of all time. He won both the America East indoor and outdoor triple jump titles as a freshman and added two more of each before he graduated, giving him six conference championships in the triple jump. He also won New England titles in the triple jump during the outdoor seasons of 1997 and ’99 and the indoor 2000 season.
Carpenter’s final season at NU, the 2000 indoor season, was one of the most dominating in Husky history. In nine indoor meets, Carpenter won the triple jump seven times, including the America East and New England championships. He jumped over 50’0 in seven of nine meets, including a career-best 50’9.25 at the Husky Invitational. That mark is second on the all-time indoor list at Northeastern only to record-holder Ron Chambers. As team captain in 2000, Carpenter led the Huskies to the America East title and a runner-up finish at the New England Championship.
Carpenter’s brother, Jared, was also a standout for Northeastern. Jared won America East titles in the long jump and triple jump and also competed in the sprints, high jump and pentathlon for the Huskies. Carpenter’s youngest brother, Jed, was also a standout triple jumper for Newton North and earned a track & field scholarship to the University of Virginia. Adam helped coach Jed to a Newton North record of 48’6 in the triple jump and state titles in that event, the 400-meter and relays.
At Newton North, Carpenter was an assistant to Jim Blackburn, a multiple-time Massachusetts Coach of the Year and a member of the Mass. State Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
