Community Involvement

Student-athletes from Northeastern's men's hockey team participate in a mentoring program, where they help area youths with their homework and teach them floor hockey.
The community involvement component of the Student-Athletes First program is designed to foster a sense of responsibility that comes along with the privilege of competing in intercollegiate athletics. Through the Athletics Department’s partnership with the Center for the Study of Sport in Society, student-athletes take part in community service projects. Husky student-athletes are required to participate in one community service project per semester.

Elements:
• Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)
• Providing Athletes With Support (PAWS)
• Community Service Projects
• Virtues & Values Workshops

Some community service projects that Husky student-athletes have participated in include mentoring programs, sports clinics, food giveaways, the Big Brothers and Big Sisters clubs and environmental cleanups. Read more about the Huskies' community service efforts in this article.

In addition, the Northeastern Athletics Department gives out two awards for outstanding community service. The Chanda Gunn Community Service Award, named in honor of former Northeastern goalie and current Team USA player Chanda Gunn, is given to a female student-athlete. The Philip Johnston Award is given to a male student-athlete and is named in honor of former NU football and hockey player Philip Johnston, who spent 33 years working for the humanitarian organization CARE, including 15 as its President and CEO. Read about the 2005-06 recipients in this article. You may nominate a student-athlete for one of these awards using the nomination form in Word or PDF format.
