Roy Coates
Head Coach
First season at NU: 1993-94
Alma mater: UMass Boston '86

Head coach Roy Coates enters his 16th season leading the Huskies’ swimming & diving program in 2008-09. The Huskies are coming off a very successful 2007-08 campaign in which they went undefeated in the regular season (10-0) and finished fifth at the CAA Championship.

Coates will look for his team to continue its success throughout the season and contend at the conference title meet. He is no stranger to success at the conference level, as he coached NU to an unprecedented five straight America East championships from 2000-04.

The Huskies annually boast some of the most competitive swimmers and divers in the region, regularly sending members to the NCAA’s year-end swimming and diving championship. Four years ago, NU sent Adela Gavozdea to the national championship at Purdue, where she earned All-America honorable mention accolades for the third season in a row. The Northeastern record books have been overhauled since Coates has come aboard as well, as all but three Husky swimming and diving records have been set during Coates’ tenure.

In his first three seasons with the Huskies, Coates also directed the NU men’s team and earned Coach of the Year honors in 1995 and ’96 as NU won America East championships in both seasons.

Before arriving at NU, Coates was the head coach of the men’s swimming team at Dartmouth College for four seasons (1989-93). He also was an assistant for the Big Green from 1986-1989. During his seven years in Hanover, N.H., Coates was also head coach of the North Country Aquatic Club, a 120-member competitive swim program of athletes ranging in age from four to 80 years.

Previously, he served as head coach at Winchester and Medford High Schools and was an assistant coach of the New England Barracudas. Besides his coaching experience, Coates is a certified Level 4 Coach by the American Swim Coaches Association and has held positions on various swimming committees.

Coates is a native of Medford, Mass., and a 1986 graduate of UMass Boston with a degree in Computer Science. He earned his master’s in Sports Leadership from Northeastern in 2008. Coates and his wife, Marianne, have a son, Daniel, and a daughter, Caroline, and live in Scituate.
