Northeastern head coach Roy Coates takes his highly successful women's swimming and diving program into its third year in the Colonial Athletic Association for the 2007-08 season. The Huskies left their mark on the America East Conference, winning five consecutive conference titles from 2000-04 before New Hampshire broke the Huskies' streak in 2005. The Huskies now have two succesful years of CAA competition under their belt, finishing 6th in the conference in both 2005-06 and 2006-07. The Huskies annually boast some of the most competitive swimmers and divers in the region, regularly sending members to the NCAA’s year-end swimming or diving championships. In 2004-05, NU sent Adela Gavozdea to the National Championship at Auburn to compete in diving. The Northeastern record books have been overhauled since Coates has come aboard as well, as all but four Husky swimming and diving records have been set during Coates’ tenure. NU’s success is a testament to Coates and his recruiting efforts. Before arriving at NU, Coates was the head coach of the men’s swimming team at Dartmouth College for four seasons (1989-93). He also was an assistant for the Big Green from 1986-1989. During his seven years in Hanover, N.H., Coates was head coach of the North Country Aquatic Club, a 120-member competitive swim program of athletes ranging in age from four to 80 years. Previously, he served as head coach at Winchester and Medford high schools and was an assistant coach of the New England Barracudas. Besides his coaching experience, Coates is a certified Level 4 Coach by the American Swim Coaches Association and has held positions on various swimming committees. In his first three seasons with the Huskies, Coates also directed the NU men’s team. He earned back-to-back Coach of the Year honors in 1995 and ’96 as the men won America East championships in both seasons. Coates is a native of Medford, Mass. and a 1986 graduate of UMass Boston with a degree in Computer Science. He and his wife Marianne have a son Daniel, and a daughter Caroline, and live in Scituate, Mass.
