Fugge named CAA Swimmer of the Week
Fugge led Northeastern to a 156-144 win over Massachusetts, sweeping the short-distance freestyle events. The Farmington, Conn., native won the 50 (24.74), 100 (53.67) and 200 (1:55.90) freestyles on Saturday and also swam the final leg of the first-place 200 medley relay team. Her time of 24.02 was the fastest individual mark in the race. It was the third time this year that Fugge won three freestyle events at a meet.
Two weeks before the meet against Massachusetts, Fugge had one of her most impressive performances as a Husky, carrying Northeastern to a first-place finish at the Terrier Invitational. Competing against nine other teams (including Massachusetts), Fugge took first in the 200 IM (2:07.36) and broke her own Northeastern record in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:52.52. With a pair of second-place finishes in the 50 (24.16) and 100 (52.05) freestyles, Fugge finished the meet with 74 points. She proved to be a work-horse throughout the three-day event, guiding the Huskies to wins in the 200 and 400 medley relays, as well as second-place finishes in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays and a third-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay.
With Fugge at the helm, Northeastern is now 7-0 (2-0 CAA) with three meets remaining before the CAA Championship on Feb. 27. The Huskies were a perfect 9-0 in 2001-02, and were crowned America East champions. Northeastern will take a training trip to Ponce, Puerto Rico before returning to action on Jan. 5 against James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va.
