Brad Thiessen
Junior goaltender Brad Thiessen became Northeastern's second-ever Hobey Hat Trick finalist as a top-three finalist for college hockey's player of the year award. He was named a first-team All-American and Northeastern's first-ever Hockey East Player of the Year. He was the only unanimous selection for the Hockey East All-Star team. He was also named New England MVP and a New England All-Star.
He signed a two-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins on April 3 and will forgo his senior season at Northeastern to pursue his professional career. "I want to say thanks to everybody at Northeastern," said Thiessen. "I really enjoyed the last three years here. Northeastern will always be a special place for me and it did a lot to help me further my goal of playing in the NHL."
Thiessen had the most dominating season of any goalie in Northeastern history. He set Northeastern's season records in every major category: wins (25), goals against average (2.12), save percentage (.931), saves (1195), games (41) and minutes (2495:44).
Thiessen led the Huskies to one of the best seasons in program history. Northeastern tied the program record with 25 wins, finished second in the Hockey East regular season for just the second time ever to clinch home ice in the Hockey East Quarterfinals for the first time since 1997-98, and made its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1994. Thiessen was named Hockey East Player of the Month for October and Goalie of the Month for November and January.
Thiessen was the Huskies' backstop the whole way, playing every minute in net this season. Going into the NCAA Tournament, he led the nation in minutes and saves. He finished the season with totals of 2495:44 minutes and 1195 saves. No other goaltender had more than 1100 saves. His 2.12 goals against average ranked 12th in the nation and he averaged 29.1 saves per game, which was more than any other goaltender in the top 15 in GAA.
Quite simply, he was the key cog for the Huskies with a 25-12-4 record, 2.12 goals against average and .931 save percentage. He ranked among the national leaders in every statistical category and is Hockey East's top ranked goaltender by Goalies' World Magazine.
In 2008-09, Thiessen had three shutouts, 16 games allowing one goal or less, and 24 games allowing two goals or less. Northeastern is 19-1-4 in those games.
Thiessen has done all this while maintaining strong academics in Northeastern's School of Journalism.
Team Leaders
Brad Thiessen had a very deep and experienced team around him, which helped Northeastern improve from 13-18-5 in 2006-07 to 16-18-3 in 2007-08 to 25-12-4 this season. The Huskies' blueline was led by Hockey East Best Defensive Defenseman Louis Liotti (4-9-13, +11) and juniors Jim Driscoll (1-5-6, +14) and David Strathman (2-17-19, +7). The forwards are led by Hockey East second-team All-Star Ryan Ginand (20-12-32), All-Star honorable mention Wade MacLeod (14-21-35) and Hockey East Best Defensive Foward Joe Vitale (7-20-27).
