Huskies announce 2009 schedule

The defending CAA regular season champion Huskies have released their 2009 schedule, head coach Ken Nichols announced Thursday. Northeastern will play a 28-game slate that will include nine home dates at Solomon Court. The Huskies will open the season Aug. 28 against Long Island in the UMBC Tournament in Baltimore.
In addition to its appearance in the UMBC Tournament, Northeastern will also participate in three tournaments during the month of September. The Huskies will travel to California to play in the Long Beach State/UC Irvine Invitational Sept. 4-5. The following weekend, the Huskies will travel to Worcester for the Crusaders Classic at Holy Cross, playing the Crusaders and Boston College on Sept. 12. On Sept. 18-19, the Huskies will travel to Hanover, N.H., to participate in the Dartmouth Invitational.
Other non-conference opponents include regional rivals Rhode Island (Sept. 1), Connecticut (Sept. 16) and New Hampshire (Sept. 22).
The Huskies will play a 14-game CAA slate in defense of their 2008 regular season title, when they went 12-2. The schedule opens on Sept. 26 at home against Hofstra. The Huskies will play home-and-homes with Hofstra, Delaware, Towson, UNC Wilmington and Georgia State. They will play single home games against James Madison and George Mason and single road games at William & Mary and VCU.
The season culminates with the CAA Championship Nov. 20-22. The tournament is hosted by the regular season champion. The Huskies hosted the 2008 CAA Championship at Solomon Court.
Nichols, the 2008 CAA Co-Coach of the Year, is now in his 10th season at Northeastern, and he sports a 167-116 record with the Huskies. He returns 10 letterwinners from last season's team, including All-CAA first team honoree Britney Brown.
