The Northeastern volleyball team suffered its first conference loss of the season as the Hofstra Dutchwomen defeated the Huskies 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Cabot Gym. NU fell to 11-11 on the season and 4-1 in America East play, while Hofstra improved to 11-10 overall and a perfect 6-0 in conference action.
With the victory, Hofstra is the lone undefeated team in the America East standings, but the Huskies gave the Dutchwomen a big scare.
The Huskies got out to an early 8-1 lead in the first game and battled the rest of the way to eventually win 15-11. The Dutchwomen had a poor hitting percentage of .022 in the opening game that did not help their cause.
The second game was back and forth the entire way, as the biggest lead either team established was four points. With Hofstra up 8-5, Northeastern went on a seven-point run to take a 12-8 advantage. The Dutchwomen then went on a seven-point run of their own to win the game 15-12. The loss in the second game marked NU's first loss in 16 games. The Huskies won their last two games against Dartmouth Sept. 30 and then swept four straight matches entering Sunday's action.
Hofstra jumped out to an early 8-0 lead in the third game, but once again the Huskies fought back with a 15-5 run to win the game 15-13. NU sophomore Lindsay Wagner recorded eight kills in the third game alone.
The fourth game was all Hofstra as they got out to an early 5-0 lead and never looked back as they won 15-4. NU had a low hitting percentage of .102, while the Dutchwomen hit .400.
In the decisive fifth game, like the second game, it was back and forth action all the way. NU eventually lost 15-10.
In the loss, Wagner had 24 digs to go along with a career-high 22 kills. Freshman Kristin Ursillo added a double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs, as did sophomore Erin Spangler (11 kills, 14 digs). Sophomore Kelly Cognac chipped in with a career-best 19 digs.
Next up for the Huskies is America East opponent Drexel on Friday at Cabot Gym (7 p.m.).
