In a much-anticipated America East volleyball match between Northeastern and New Hampshire, the Huskies lost 3-1 to the Wildcats Saturday afternoon in Cabot Gym. The Wildcats secured second place in the conference standings with one week of play left in the regular season. In the first game of the match, the Wildcats jumped out to an early 6-1 lead, but a timeout by NU head coach Ken Nichols settled his team down. The Huskies responded with a 6-0 run to make the score 7-6 in favor of Northeastern. Back and forth play followed, until NU closed out the game with a 6-1 run to win 15-11. Husky sophomore Erin Spangler recorded seven kills on nine attacks with no errors in the game as NU tallied an impressive .386 hitting percentage. The Wildcats once again got off to a good start as they took a quick 7-1 lead in the second game. UNH lengthened its lead to 14-4, but the Huskies wouldn't quit. NU battled back to make it 14-8 before the 'Cats ended the Huskies' hopes of a comeback with a 15-8 victory. Like NU in the first game, UNH posted a hefty hitting percentage of .383. Following the pattern of the first two games, UNH got off to an early advantage, 8-2, but NU fought back. With Northeastern trailing by four, 14-10, UNH coach Jill Hirschinger called a timeout to get her squad refocused. The 'Cats answered with a game-winning kill by senior Jillian Ross. In the fourth and final game of the match, NU jumped out to the early lead with a 7-2 advantage. However, it was the 'Cats turn to fight back as they did so to win the game, 15-8, and the match. Sophomore Lindsay Wagner led the NU attack with 20 kills and junior Kristin Deatherage added 18 kills. Freshman Kristin Ursillo also chipped in with 10 kills and 19 digs. UNH's Ross had a game high 24 kills and 12 digs to the lead the victorious Wildcats. NU drops to 16-14 overall and 9-3 in America East, while UNH improves to 20-9 on the season and 11-2 in conference play. Next up for the Huskies is Vermont on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Cabot Gym. It will be the final home contest of the season, and NU will say goodbye to seniors Carrie Powell, Suzana Stojakovic and Liz Waclawik. No.Name GP K E TA Pct.
