SYRACUSE, NY - The Northeastern volleyball team picked up its first victory of the 2001 season with a 3-2 win over Syracuse, the host school at the Big Orange Invitational.
In a tightly contested match for all five games, NU took a 2-1 advantage but then lost the fourth game 31-29. However, the Huskies prevailed in game five, 15-10. Junior Lindsay Wagner had an impressive showing for the Huskies with 18 kills on 49 attacks with only one error. Wagner also chipped in with seven digs. Senior Adrianna DiGregorio had 13 kills and Kristin Deatherage 11. Sophomore Kristin Ursillo set up the NU offense with 51 assists, her second 50-plus assist match in as many outings. Syracuse's Laura Koster led all players with 23 kills while her teammate Noreen Carroll had 57 assists.
NU dropped the opening match of the Big Orange Invitational, 3-2, against Fairfield. The Huskies have one match remaining in Syracuse, later this afternoon versus Kent State.
