| 2001 Schedule/Results Towson 3, Northeastern 2
BOSTON, MA - The Northeastern volleyball team lost a grueling America East match, 3-2, against Towson on Sunday afternoon at Solomon Court. Towson now stands alone at the top of the league standings with a perfect 7-0 mark, while NU falls to second at 6-1. Sarah Miller's game-high 20 kills and 13 digs helped lead the Tigers to the victory. Four other Tigers also recorded double-figure performances in kills as Liz Goubeaux had 18, Melanie Madden had 16, Jordann Tomasek has 12 and 18 digs and Meghan Evans added 10. Senior setter Andrea LaBlanc recorded 64 assists and 23 digs as well. Northeastern was led by Gianina Pellegrini who tallied 15 kills and nine total blocks (four solo and five block assists). Pellegrini became NU's all-time leader in solo blocks, passing Lisa Nolan's mark of 71 set from 1996-99. Pellegrini now has 75 career solo blocks. Kristin Deatherage (13 kills), Erin Spangler (13 kills) and Rebecca Holland (11 kills and 17 digs) were key contributors for the Huskies. In game number one, Towson jumped out to an early 11-6 lead before NU coach Ken Nichols spent a timeout to regroup his team. The Huskies responded by coming back and taking a 17-16 lead. Both teams battled back and forth and were tied at 29. Towson then went on a 5-3 run to take the game 34-32. Tiger senior setter LaBlanc recorded 17 assists and 10 digs in the first game alone. The second game once again went to the Tigers as they defeated the Huskies 30-21. Towson hit an impressive .356 for game two, compared to NU's .213 hitting percentage. In game three, the Huskies jumped out to a 5-1 lead and never trailed in recording a 30-22 win. Spangler led the way with five kills. The Tigers were starting to gain momentum with consecutive points and were down 27-21 when Kristin Ursillo had an amazing dig to keep a play alive. Spangler finished the volley with a kill from Ursillo to give NU a commanding 28-21 advantage. The Tigers got out to an early advantage in game four as they led 8-3 before an NU timeout. The Huskies then responded by reeling off a 6-3 run to get back in the game at 11-9. With the scored tied at 25, defensive specialist Sara Bill kept the volley alive with a spectacular dig and Lindsay Wagner finished the play with a kill to give the Huskies a 26-25 edge. Pellegrini then took over, recording four straight points for NU on two kills and two solo blocks to close out the game, 30-22. In the fifth and decisive game, Towson jumped out to a 5-1 lead. Northeastern answered with a 4-1 run to trim the edge to 6-5, but the Tigers scored three straight points to open up a 9-5 advantage. Nichols took a timeout to regain his team's composure. The four-point advantage that Towson took out of the timeout proved to be too much for NU as the Tigers won the game and match 15-11. With the loss, Northeastern falls to 16-8 on the season and 6-1 in America East action, while Towson improves to 22-1 for the year and remains perfect in conference play with a 7-0 record.
