TOWSON, MD - The Northeastern University volleyball team defeated America East's top team, Towson University, 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in Maryland. NU and Towson have identical 10-1 conference marks, but the Huskies hold the tie-breaker over the Tigers.
NU senior Gianina Pellegrini came up huge for the Huskies on Saturday as she tallied 20 kills on 31 attacks with just one error for an impressive .613 hitting percentage on the day. She also had seven total blocks, four of them solo.
Contributions came from many players, however, for Northeastern as Erin Spangler (13 kills), Kristin Deatherage (12 kills), Lindsay Wagner (eight kills and 24 digs) and Kristin Ursillo (52 assists and 11 digs) all did their part as well in the Husky victory. NU outhit the Tigers .224 to .113.
After jumping out to a commanding two game lead, NU dropped a tight third game 30-28 to the Tigers to give Towson some hope. The Tigers hopes would be crushed, however, as NU took the fourth game 30-27 and the match 3-1.
NU holds the tie-breaker over Towson for the top spot in the conference because the Huskies put up more of a fight in their loss to the Tigers earlier this season. Northeastern took Towson to five games enroute to a 3-2 loss, while NU dismantled the Tigers in four games on Saturday.
Northeastern now travels to Drexel to take on the Dragons at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
