TOWSON, MD - Northeastern University swept University of Maine 3-0 (30-27, 30-18, 30-21) to win the 2001 America East Volleyball Championship Sunday afternoon at the Towson Center. Northeastern now earns the conference automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.

The Huskies were led by Lindsay Wagner with 12 kills and 13 digs. America East Setter of the Year and Championship Most Outstanding Player Kristin Ursillo had 31 assists and four kills. Kristin Deatherage added 11 kills while Gianina Pellegrini collected eight kills and nine digs.

Maine was led by America East Player of the Year Leah Voss with 13 kills and seven assists while Carmen Gabriel added 11 kills and 13 digs. On a .444 hitting percentage.

Northeastern advanced to the finals by beating No. 3 New Hampshire 3-1 (30-19, 36-38, 30-23, 30-24) in the semifinals yesterday. Northeastern was led by Wagner with 20 kills and 12 assists. Deatherage added 16 kills while Ursillo collected 56 assists and 13 digs. Also picking up a double-double with 13 kills and 14 digs was Pellegrini with a .357 hitting percentage.

Maine upset No. 1 Towson 3-1 (30-23, 18-30, 32-30, 30-25) in the first round. This was the first time that the No. 1 seed has not advanced to the championship match since implementing a four-team single-elimination conference championship in 1997, and Maine’s first appearance in the America East championship in just the third year of the program.

The Black Bears were led by Voss with 27 kills and 12 assists. Her 27 kills set a new America East Championship record, besting the previous mark of 26 set in 1994 by Stephanie Szorc of Hartford. Gabriel added 16 kills and 13 digs while Cheryl Elliott had 48 assists and 10 digs.

The America East All-Championship team consists of Melanie Madden of Towson, Alyson Coler of New Hampshire, Voss, Gabrie, Wagner, Pellegrini and Ursillo. Ursillo was also named the America East Championship Most Outstanding Player.

The NCAA Championship bracket will be announced Monday, November 26.
