Senior Jennifer Fopma made a big splash in her first match in a Northridge uniform as she led the Matadors to a season-opening 30-28, 30-17, 30-25 win over Northeastern in the first match of the 2003 Fremont Investment & Loan Invitational in Northridge.
With the win, the Matadors are 1-0 on the season, while the Huskies drop their season-opener and are 0-1. Fopma led Northridge with 14 kills and nearly posted a triple-double as she added nine digs and nine blocks. For the match, Fopma hit .258 with 14 kills and six errors in 31 attempts. Junior Heather Fobian also reached double-figures with 10 kills, while hitting .227. Setter Nadine Nickel recorded a match-high 42 assists, while Jen Ryan, also playing her first match for Northridge, chipped in six kills and a match-high 13 digs.
For Northeastern, Larissa Adomat and Whitney Turner each had a team-high eight kills, while Turner also added 11 digs. Karrin Moore chipped in six kills and Kristin Ursillo added five kills, while hitting a match-high .417.
Behind Fopma, the Matadors controlled the net as they recorded 15.0 blocks as a team to 6.0 for the Huskies. Northridge had three solo blocks (all by Fopma) and 24 block assists. The Matadors also had a dig advantage as a team, 52-44 and had eight service aces to three for Northeastern. As a team, Northridge hit .215 (49-23-121) to .096 (33-22-114) for the Huskies.
