The Northeastern volleyball team got back on the winning track with a 3-2 (22-30, 30-28, 17-30, 30-27, 15-12) victory over Delaware Friday in Newark, Del. Junior Whitney Turner led all Huskies with 16 kills and added 11 digs. NU improved its record to 7-8 on the year (5-3 Colonial Athletic Association) while the Fighting Blue Hens fell to 5-13 (2-5 CAA).
Lauren DeTurk (13) and Brandie Genibrel (10) each registered double-digit kills for the Huskies, while Kelly Gibson posted 16 kills in a losing effort for UDel. NU got 21 digs from Genibrel and 20 from Kira Batura, while Larissa Adomat added five blocks.
The Blue Hens dominated games one and three, outhitting NU .238 to .105 and .359 to .091, respectively. But the Huskies held tight in the other three games to take the match three games to two.
Game two saw the teams tied on 15 different occasions, including late in the frame at 28-all. But the Huskies were able to get consecutive kills from Turner on the final two points to take the game with a 30-28 victory.
In game four, the Huskies got out to a 10-4 lead only to see the home squad bounce back with seven in a row to regain an 11-10 edge. NU then rolled off eight of the next 10 points to take a five-point lead, and held it the rest of the way, again finishing things off with a Turner kill for a 30-27 victory.
The Huskies carried over that momentum into game five, jumping out to an 8-4 lead at the break and did not relinquish it for a 15-12 win. Turner once again finished off the game with a kill to help the road squad to the gritty victory.
Northeastern is back in action on Friday when it takes to the road against Hofstra for a conference match. The Pride is now 10-6 overall, and overtook the CAA lead with a 7-1 record following a four-game victory over Towson (17-3, 6-1 CAA) on Saturday night.
