Four players tallied double-digit kills for the Northeastern volleyball team, but Virginia Commonwealth came away with a crucial 3-2 (30-27, 24-30, 30-18, 25-30, 15-11) victory on Friday night in Richmond, Va. Whitney Turner led the Huskies with 16 digs and Ashley Reeves added 14 in the loss. The Huskies are now 10-13 (7-7 Colonial Athletic Association), while VCU moves to 16-9 (8-5 CAA).

The Huskies got out to a quick start in game one, taking an early 9-4 lead with five kills. But VCU then righted its ship and tied the game up at 12 after a Turner attack error. The two teams battled back-and-forth, with the Rams taking a 23-21 lead late. Then, Virginia Commonwealth ran off four straight points to build its lead to six, and the Rams finished off the game at 30-27.

Game two was an incredibly close affair, with neither team able to build up a lead of more than two points until the Huskies opened up a 21-18 lead on a kill by Reeves. The two teams traded points to 25-22, when the Huskies broke the pattern to take a 27-22 lead on a Larissa Adomat kill and a VCU attack error, and moved on to a 30-24 victory on a Turner kill.

With the game tied at one, the Rams came roaring out of the break to a 7-0 advantage and never looked back in a 30-18 victory. The Huskies trimmed the lead to 11-7, but VCU returned to recapture a commanding lead at 19-10. NU was outhit .303 to .079 in the frame.

Their backs against the wall, the Huskies came out strong in game four and fought to a 17-all tie. NU then was able to take 12 of the next 17 points to take a lopsided 29-22 lead. The Rams rallied for three straight points to trim the deficit to four, but the Huskies finished off the game after a VCU attack error, and the teams went to a fifth game.

In the deciding game, the Huskies fell behind early at 3-0, but recovered to tie the game at five and went on to take an 8-7 lead at the midpoint of the frame. The Rams then tallied seven of the next eight points to take a commanding 14-9 lead, and went on to win the game by a 15-11 margin.

Adomat and Lauren DeTurk added 10 kills each for the Huskies, while Chelsea Carroll led NU with 23 assists. Kira Batura and Brandie Genibrel made 16 and 13 digs, respectively, while Adomat registered six blocks.

VCU’s Ludmila Francescatto led all players with 18 kills and added 15 digs defensively. Renata Salvatori made 16 kills, Melissa Peterson 15 in the victory. Cat Juson led the Rams with 37 assists.

Northeastern is back in action Saturday night, when the Huskies will head to Williamsburg, Va. for a matchup with William and Mary at 7 p.m.
