The Northeastern volleyball team came away with its first conference victory as a member of the Colonial Athletic Association, defeating visiting George Mason 3-1 (30-24, 30-22, 16-30, 30-27). Sophomore Kira Batura and senior Brandie Genibrel notched 11 kills apiece to lead the Huskies (2-5, 1-1 CAA). The loss drops the Patriots to 1-5 (0-2 CAA) on the season.

Game one was a hard-fought affair that saw the two teams tied at 22 late in the frame. But the Huskies were able to garner eight of the contest’s next 10 points – four on GMU attacking errors – to take a 1-0 lead.

In game two, the Huskies grabbed a 13-12 lead and never looked back to earn a 30-22 victory. NU built a 27-17 lead late in the game, with back-to-back kills by Genibrel gaining the advantage. The Patriots wrestled back four points in a row to trim the deficit to 27-21, but NU closed out the frame with a kill from freshman Sarah Stein.

The third game was all GMU from the get-go. The Patriots took a 1-0 lead and never relinquished it, building up a 10-4 lead that forced NU head coach Ken Nichols to call timeout. The Huskies got one point back at 10-5, but that was as close as they would get as GMU cruised to the 30-16 victory.

Northeastern bounced back in game four and the Patriots and Huskies battled to a 17-all tie. GMU got the game’s next three points, one on a Genibrel service error and two on service aces by Jaqueline Kohley, to earn a 20-17 edge. George Mason held the lead until for the next five points, but NU rattled off four straight points to take a late 23-22 lead. Three straight kills by Genibrel gave the Huskies a 26-23 edge, and the two teams traded points the rest of the way, leading to a 30-27 NU victory.

In addition to the contributions of Batura and Genibrel, the Huskies got a strong offensive outing from freshman Lauren DeTurk, who registered seven kills and a .217 attack percentage. Junior Ivana Pavlisin posted 24 assists, while classmate Chelsea Carroll added 17 of her own. Defensively, NU got 13 digs apiece from Batura and junior Ashley Reeves, who added five blocks (two solo) to her totals.

The Patriots had three players notch double-digit kills, led by Kohler’s 13. Chantal Bodkin-Clarke and Natalia Porosa tallied 10 kills apiece. Zulma Rojas led the Patriots with 29 digs, while Janelle Wilson notched five blocks in a losing effort.

The Huskies are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 13, when they play host to non-conference foe California-Riverside. Gametime is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Solomon Court.
