The Northeastern volleyball team put forth a strong effort, but fell to visiting UC-Riverside 3-2 (30-28, 26-30, 23-30, 30-27, 15-10) Tuesday night at Solomon Court. Senior outside hitter Brandie Genibrel went 20-20 on the match, registering a career-high 21 kills and adding 23 digs, while four other Huskies posted double-digit kills. UCR’s Jamie DeKiewiet led all attackers with 29 kills.

The match was a nail-biter from start to finish, and game one was no exception. After UCR took an early lead, the Huskies grabbed their first lead of the frame at 10-9, and fought to take a six-point lead at 25-19 late in the game. But the Highlanders ran off six straight points, four on NU miscues, to tie the game at 25. The teams exchanged points to 27-all, but UCR tallied three of the final four points to take the game.

Though game two was also a back-and-forth affair, Northeastern took an early 5-4 lead and never trailed for the remainder of the game to grab a 30-26 victory. Ashley Reeves and Kira Batura each registered four kills in the game as NU outhit UCR .189 to .158.

Game three was NU’s strongest of the match, and perhaps of the season thus far, as the Huskies hit a resounding .357 and registered 20 kills in a 30-23 victory. The Huskies led from 3-2 on to register the decisive victory. Genibrel led all attackers with seven kills in the frame.

The fourth game saw the two teams hold even from beginning to end, with neither team holding an edge of greater than three points at any time. But DeKiewiet proved the difference in the frame, registering nine kills and posting a .444 attack percentage. Genibrel added six kills of her own.

The decisive fifth game looked like it would be a rout from early on, with UCR taking a 12-4 lead. The Huskies showed life, however, and took five of the next six points to trim the deficit to 13-9. Riverside took a time out, and that was enough to stall the Husky momentum and give the Highlanders the match, 3-2.

In addition to Genibrel’s contributions, Batura tallied 18 kills and 20 digs, both second most on the team. Larissa Adomat, Lauren DeTurk and Reeves each registered 10 kills on the match. Chelsea Carroll and Whitney Turner each made 15 digs, while Ivana Pavlisin posted 14. Reeves led all Huskies with five blocks.

Kimberly McNeal led all players wit 33 digs, while Valerie Bueno made 23 digs and 11 kills. Setter Kym Murphy scored 50 assists in the win.

The Huskies are back in action this weekend, when they take to the road for contests with conference foes Georgia State and UNC-Wilmington.
