The Northeastern University volleyball team will stay winless at 0-2 to start the 2006 season as the Huskies go down in three straight games, 25-30, 21-30 and 12-30, to the Lions of Loyola Marymount on Saturday afternoon in Tempe, Ariz. Sophomore hitter Lauren DeTurk led the Huskies in kills for the second straight game with nine and junior Kira Batura added eight kills, second most for NU, to go along with a match high 15 digs.
As was the case in the Huskies’ first match against Arizona State, NU was outhit and outblocked. Husky hitters totaled 13 less kills, 36 to LMU’s 29, and two fewer blocks. NU also came up with nine less digs than the Lions.
Freshman setter Jessica Tkachuk posted a team high 14 assists and raised her season total to 20 which leads the Huskies. Senior co-captain Ashley Reeves had three block assists to go with a solo block and six kills.
LMU finsihed the match with a .343 attacking percentage as six different Lions hit over .200 led by double digit kill performances by sophomore Emily Day and junior Christianna Reneau. Reneau had a match high 15 kills on .556 hitting to go with nine digs and five assists. Day posted a double-double with 12 kills and eleven digs. The Lions’ setter, sophomore Ashley Dutro, turned in a game high 20 assists.
The Huskies will close out their trip to Tempe on Saturday night, Aug. 26 at 8 p.m. as they take on Utah Valley State in their final match of the Sun Devil Classic.
