The volleyball team played well as a team but the team’s combined errors allowed host No. 14 Cal Poly to win the match in straight sets.
The Huskies gave it all they had and left their mark at the Paso Robles Marriott Invitational. Even though they did not win a match, the Huskies looked very promising and competed very well in every match.
The Huskies came out a bit stiff in the beginning of the first set. Cal Poly broke away and led by as many as six. Cal Poly’s Hailey Fithian contributed with four straight severing aces during the Mustangs’ run. Northeastern kept on fighting back with the great play of Britney Brown who had three kills and five assist in the set. NU tried to make a late break but the nine serving aces by the Mustangs was too much to handle, and Cal Poly went on to win the first set.
In the second set the Huskies came ready to play. The two teams went back and forth scoring but Cal Poly broke free on a 4-0 run. Northeastern head coach Ken Nichols called a timeout to regroup the Huskies. NU came back and chipped the Mustangs’ lead to two. Northeastern had a total of 12 kills but its five serving ace errors was the difference in the set as the Huskies fell 20-25 in set number two.
The third set started out very competitive with each team playing well and playing hard. The score flipped-flopped several times and the set saw six ties, the last being 12-12. The Huskies committed some late errors and the Mustangs capitalized and went on to win the set and the match.
Playing well for the Huskies was Lauren DeTurk who had seven kills and 11 digs. Junior Jessica Tkachuk had a team high 13 assist. Britney Brown chipped in with six kills and 11 assist.
Senior outside hitter Lauren DeTurk received All-Tournament honors for her performance at the Paso Robles Marriott Invitational.
The Huskies gave it all they had and left their mark at the Paso Robles Marriott Invitational. NU, which is led by senior captain Lauren DeTurk, looked very promising and competed very well in every match. Northeastern (2-4) will look to get back on the winning track when it takes on host Syracuse Friday Sept. 12 at the Syracuse Invitational at 7 p.m.
