The Huskies fell to non-conference opponent Fairfield, 3-2. Down two games to none, Northeastern brought the match to a deciding fifth set, but fell just short losing the match (19-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-16, 13-15). NU had three players record a double-double in Britney Brown (13 kills, 22 assists), Lauren DeTurk (17 kills, 22 digs), and Jessica Tkachuk (23 assists, 15 digs).
The Huskies fall to 13-9 overall and 7-1 in the CAA while Fairfield improves to 14-10 and 11-1 in the MAAC.
After dropping the first two sets, the Huskies regrouped in the third. Fairfield started off the set with the same momentum from the first two sets posting an early 2-0 lead. That would not last for long as the Huskies came fighting back to take a 6-5 lead. With NU leading by 12-7 midway through the set, the Stags called a timeout to regroup. Fairfield rallied back and brought the set to three, but that was as close as the Stags would get. NU held off the Fairfield run to win the set 25-20.
The Huskies carried over the same energy in the fourth set. Sophomore Helene Servillon got the Huskies started off on the right foot with great serving, giving NU an early lead. Northeastern would not look back as it went on several different runs not allowing the Stags any room for a possible comeback. Rookie Stephanie Starnes gave a lift off the bench posting two kills and one dig, as the Huskies went on to win the fourth set 25-16.
In the fifth and deciding set, the Huskies appeared to have the set won with an 8-3 lead in the set. But Fairfield’s Lauren Balmert would not let NU run away with the set. Balmert had two service aces during a Stag run that brought Fairfield within one of Northeastern. Costly errors by Northeastern allowed Fairfield to a 11-9 advantage. The Huskies were unable to recoup losing the set 15-13.
Northeastern will return to conference play when it host George Mason Friday Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. at Solomon Court.
