The volleyball team defeated Virginia Commonwealth Sunday afternoon at Solomon Court. The 3-1 win solidifies a first place finish in the CAA earning the team’s rights to host the CAA Tournament and a first round bye.

“It was an important win for us,” said head coach Ken Nichols. “We wanted to send one last message before we went into the tournament.”

Britney Brown led the Huskies, recording a match-high 15 kills along with 18 assists. Senior Brianna Seitz chipped in with nine kills and 13 digs. Also playing well for the Huskies were Lauren DeTurk who had eight kills and 13 digs. Jessica Tkachuk added a match-high 25 assists while Leah Neubeck posted 13 digs.

VCU (19-10, 10-4) finished second in the CAA standings, earning the team a first round bye in the tournament. Ivana Rich had a team-high 12 kills while Lenda Melicharkova added 21 assists and nine digs.

Northeastern’s 12-2 finish in the CAA is the team’s best since entering the conference in 2004. This is the first time since the 1992 season that Northeastern has been the top seed.

Before the match, NU’s three seniors, Lauren DeTurk, Sarah Stein, and Brianna Seitz were all honored for their outstanding play in the past four years at Northeastern.

Northeastern got off to a 4-0 start in the first set lead by Brianna Seitz’s excellent serves. The Rams were able to chopped NU’s lead down in half, 7-5, but that was as close as VCU would get. The Huskies lead the set by as many as seven. VCU attempted a late rally but if fell short allowing Northeastern to take the 25-16 win.

In the competitive second set, both teams came out ready to play. The Huskies to a 3-1 advantage early but the two teams would go back and forth on the scoreboard for most of the set. Following a VCU timeout with the score at 24-23 in favor of Northeastern, the Rams committed a costly error costing them the chances of coming back to win the set.

The two teams went into the third set with the same momentum from the second. NU and VCU would flipped-flopped points early on in the set. With the score notched at 11, the Rams went on a tear going on a 4-1 run. VCU never looked back and went on to win the set 25-16.

VCU led midway through the fourth set, but six straight errors by the Rams allowed NU to take a 14-11 lead. The Rams were able to bring it within two, but the swings of sophomore Britney Brown kept the Huskies in the lead as they went to win the set.

The CAA Quarterfinals begins on Saturday night at 4 p.m. at Solomon Court. NU will play the winner of the match between the no. 4 and no. 5 seed on Sunday.
