Huskies sweep Hofstra to advance to CAA final

The top-seeded Huskies defeated the fifth-seeded Hofstra Pride, 3-0 in a CAA Semifinals match Sunday night at Solomon Court. With the 28-26, 25-20, 25-17 win, Northeastern advances to the CAA Finals for the first time since joining the league in 2005 and it marks the Huskies first trip to a conference championship match since 2001.

Northeastern (19-10) was led by senior Brianna Seitz who tied a match-high in kills with 10 and had seven digs. 2008 CAA Player of the Year Lauren DeTurk added eight kills, a match-high 18 digs, and two blocks. All-CAA first team Britney Brown posted 22 assists, eight kills, and six digs. Junior Leah Neubeck chipped in with 16 digs.

Hofstra (18-14) was led by Sarah Lopez's match-high 29 assists and 10 digs. Lauren Engle added 10 kills and seven digs.

Northeastern began the first set taking an quick 2-0 lead. Hofstra turned the set right around going on a 4-0 run taking a 5-3 lead early on in the set. DeTurk's swings rallied the Huskies back to a 7-7 tie. The two squad went on to exchange points through the middle of the set. The Pride was able to take a 23-20 lead late in the set, but the Huskies would sneak their way to a 24-24 tie thanks to errors from the Pride. Hofstra gained two set points, but sophomore Caitlin Tittl made two key kills tying up the set allowing DeTurk to wrap up the set with a kill from Brown. NU won the first set 28-26.

NU kept the momentum going in the second set as it went on to win 25-20 not allowing the Pride to take the lead a single time. The Huskies started off strong in the set taking a 5-2 lead. Northeastern kept pounding the ball at Hofstra, who struggled in the set committing nine errors and a team hit percentage of .000. Northeastern led by as many as seven before the Pride made a run to cut the gap to one making the score 21-20 in favor of Northeastern. NU would go on to score four straight points to end the set to become victorious.

The third and deciding set was all Northeastern. The team committed only two errors and accumilated a .424 hit percentage. Seitz got things started with two service aces in a row. An error by Hofstra led NU jump to an early 4-1 lead. Northeastern then went on a 5-0 run. Following a Hofstra timeout, the pride was able to make two fast score closing the lead to four. But that was as close as the Pride would get. Seitz had five kills on a .444 hit percentage guiding the Huskies to a 25-17 win in the third set.

Northeastern will take on third-seeded Delaware Blue Hens in the CAA Finals Monday night at 7 p.m. at Solomom Court.
