Huskies come up short in CAA title match
Nov. 24, 2008
Solomon Court at Cabot Center (Boston, Mass.)
The volleyball team came within two points of capturing its first CAA title, but lost in the deciding fifth set 15-13 and lost the match 3-2 to Delaware in the CAA Championship match on Monday night at Solomon Court. The Blue Hens third-seeded Blue Hens captured their second straight CAA Title.
Northeastern (19-11) was lead by CAA Player of the Year Lauren DeTurk who had career-high 28 kills to go along with 18 digs. DeTurk was also named to the All-Tournament team. Junior Leah Neubeck added 24 digs and also earned a spot on the All-Tournament team. All-CAA first team Britney Brown recorded her second triple-double of the season (31 assists, 10 kills, 11 digs). Brianna Seitz (10 kills, 12 digs) and Jessica Tkachuk (24 assists, 12 digs) added a pair of double-doubles.
Delaware (19-15) had four players with double-digit kills including Katie Dennehy who had a team-high 21 along with 17 digs. Jess Chason earn Most Outstanding Performer honors following 59 assists and 16 digs showing. CAA Rookie of the Year Kim Stewart contributed with a 16-kill and 17-dig performance.
Northeastern got things started in the first set taking an early 2-0 lead. The Blue Hens would rally early going on a 4-0 run to take an 8-4 lead. The Huskies made a run of their own, narrowing the lead to one. That was as close as NU would get as Delaware held off a late Husky run to win the set 25-21.
The Huskies bounced back to capture the second set, 25-20. Delaware opened up the set with a 4-1 lead before the swings of Brianna Seitz tied the set at 8 all. The Blue Hens fought back and took a three-point advantage on the Huskies. But that would not last as Lauren DeTurk, who had seven kills in the set with a .462 hit percentage, boosted Northeastern to an 18-14 lead off a service ace. Delaware tried to make a late run, but a kill by DeTurk from Jessica Tkachuk sealed set number two for the Huskies and tied the match at 1-1.
Northeastern carried the momentum over with them in the third set, notching 22 kills and hit a .340 clip earning a 30-28 victory. Lauren DeTurk stepped up once again swinging for a set-high nine kills, Britney Brown and Jessica Tkachuk had nine assists apiece. Both teams came out very strong in set number three. It was a back-and-forth head-to-head battle. With the set on the line there was a total of six set point opportunities. With the score tied at 28 all, Brown with the assist from DeTurk was able to split the defenders landing the kill. With set point and a rowdy crowd of over 600 on her side, DeTurk was able to get a service ace solidifying a NU third-set victory.
Delaware rebounded in the fourth set with a 25-11 win. Northeastern was just unable to get any offense going as they made only seven kills on a .041 hit percentage. Delaware’s Katie Dennehy had seven kills of her own in the set with the help of fellow teammate Jess Chason who had 15 assists in the set.
The fifth and final set was a nail biter. Delaware was strong off the serve taking a quick 4-1 lead in the set to 15. Northeastern was able to answer right back and tied up the set at 6 all off a kill by Jillian Robinson. However the Blue Hens were able to break away and take a five-point lead. Following an NU timeout, the Huskies were able to come within one. But CAA Rookie of the Year Kim Stewart crushed Northeastern’s hopes of its first CAA Title with won swing allowing Delaware to win the match 15-13 and be crowned the 2008 CAA Champions.
It was a remarkable season for the Huskies as they ended the season 19-11 overall and 12-2 in the CAA. The 12-2 conference mark is the best the Huskies have ever finished in the CAA since joining the league in 2005. It was also the first time since 1992 that Northeastern has finished first in a conference since 1992. The Huskies also advanced to a conference finals match for the first time in seven years.
The Huskies will return 10 players for the 2009 season including All-CAA first team Britney Brown and All-Tournament Leah Neubeck.
