The Northeastern Huskies started the 2009 season with a victory, winning three straight sets (25-14, 25-16, 25-16) over Long Island at the Madison Bingman Memorial Tournament hosted by UMBC. The Huskies posted a .299 attacking percentage and totaled 26 blocks in the contest.
Northeastern dominated the first set jumping out to a 22-9 lead. Junior Caitlin Tittl totaled five of her seven overall kills to put away the Blackbirds 25-14. The second set had the two teams battling early on with Northeastern holding a 7-6 lead. The Huskies would outscore Long Island 14-3 to go up 21-9. Long Island would battle back to cut the lead to seven, but it was not enough as NU went up 2-0.
The final set would be the closest of the match. Northeastern was only up by three with the score 17-14 before head coach Ken Nichols took a timeout. The Huskies then rolled off four straight points to go ahead 22-14, and would shut the door on Long Island as it won the set 25-16.
Preseason All-CAA selection Britney Brown led the Husky attack totaling a game-high nine kills with an attacking percentage of .316 while setting up her teammates 17 times. She also added five blocks. Tittl posted a .500 attack percentage. Stephanie Starnes and Jessica Tkachuk added seven kills, while Jillian Robinson posted six kills. Tkachuk also had 16 assists and led the team in digs with nine.
Freshman Nicole Bishop was impressive on the defensive end in her Northeastern debut, tallying a game-high eight blocks.
Northeastern wraps up play at the Madison Bingman Memorial Tournament at 5 p.m. as it takes on host UMBC.
