Huskies defeat UMBC 3-2; win tournament

Northeastern needed five sets to dispatch host UMBC 3-2 (25-14, 26-28, 25-13, 23-25, 15-8) to win the Madison Bingman Memorial Tournament in Baltimore, Md. on Saturday. Senior co-captain Jessica Tkachuk recorded her first career triple-double (12 kills, 22 assists, 12 digs) to gain All-Tournament honors as she and Britney Brown, who captured Tournament MVP, paced the Huskies to victory in a tightly contested match.
Brown also recorded a triple-double with 14 kills, 25 assists and 11 digs for the fifth of her career.
The first set started evenly, but Northeastern would break away to win 25-14. The second set saw the score tied seven times in the contest, with neither team leading by more than three points at any time. The Huskies would drop the set 26-28. Northeastern made quick work of the Retrievers in the third set, winning 25-13.
The fourth set would prove to be a battle as both teams once again were neck and neck. Northeastern would hold a 22-21 edge, but a UMBC timeout swung the momentum the other way, with the Retrievers outlasting the Huskies to take the set 25-23.
The Huskies stormed out of the gate in the final set, never letting UMBC get close as it closed out the game 15-8 to take the victory.
Senior co-captain Leah Neubeck posted a game-high 17 digs. Caitlin Tittl, Jillian Robinson and Stephanie Starnes each added 10 kills, which were career-highs for Robinson and Starnes. Robinson also set a new career-high with eight blocks. Nicole Bishop totaled 11 blocks for the Huskies.
Northeastern returns to action September 1 at Solomon Court for the home opener against Rhode Island at 7 p.m.
