Behind 13 kills and 20 assists from Britney Brown, the Huskies knocked
off Rhode Island 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 22-25, 25-13) Tuesday at Solomon
Court. Stephanie Starnes posted a double-double with a career-high 12
kills and 10 digs. Jillian Robinson chipped in 10 kills for the
Huskies, who improved to 3-0 on the season.
The first match would be tightly contested as both teams battled back and forth. The Huskies would pull away when Starnes, Robinson and Caitlin Tittl (10 kills) would record five kills among in the final possessions them to give Northeastern a 1-0 lead.
Rhode Island jumped out to an early lead in the second taking a 13-9 edge before coach Ken Nichols called a timeout. The Huskies would then rally, scoring nine unanswered points to go up 23-17 and win the set 25-18.
The Huskies dropped the third set 22-25, playing from behind the entire time. Rhode Island's Kayla Newberg would stymie the Huskies, recording five kills in the set.
Northeastern bounced back quickly in the final set as it jumped out to a 10-3 lead. The Rams fought back, bringing the margin down to just one point, but the Huskies would record five straight kills, with the final three coming from Brown, to win the set 25-13 and the match 3-1.
Co-captains Jessica Tkachuk and Leah Neubeck added 21 assists and 16 digs respectively.
Northeastern heads west
this weekend to play in the Long Beach State/UC Irvine Invitational,
starting Friday against Montana at 7 p.m., Eastern.
