Britney Brown posted 14 kills and 14 assists while Caitlin Tittl tallied 10 kills and 11 digs to lead Northeastern past rival Hofstra 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-20, 25-22) in volleyball action Saturday afternoon. The Huskies defense posted 21 total blocks in the contest. Northeastern picked up its first win in four matches and improve to 5-5 in the CAA and 12-11 overall.
With the score tied at 6-6 in the first set, Stephanie Starnes gave the Huskies two kills and Leah Neubeck delivered a service ace, coupled with a Hofstra attacking error to give Northeastern a 10-6 lead prompting a Hofstra timeout. The Pride struck back and tied the score at 19 all. Northeastern would grab a short lead, but Hofstra fought back again to tie things at 22-22 when head coach Ken Nichols used a Northeastern timeout. The Huskies responded out of the break, with Brown notching the go ahead kill as the Huskies scored the final three points of the match to take a 25-22 win.
Hofstra grabbed an early six-point lead in the second set. The Huskies would pull to within two, but the Pride continued to built its cushion, pushing the lead to 22-17, causing the Huskies to use a timeout. Northeastern snagged the first point out of the timeout on a Jessica Tkachuk kill, but Hofstra held off Northeastern for a 25-19 win to knot the match at 1-1.
The third set proved to be evenly matched with nine ties. With the score deadlocked at 16 apiece, Tittl recorded a kill to give Northeastern the lead for good and gain a 2-1 advantage with a 25-20 set win.
The Pride would not go lightly in the decisive set for Northeastern, as it jumped out to a 10-6 lead, prompting a Huskies timeout. Gradually, the Huskies fought back and a Lauryn Ciszek kill would tie the game at 19-19. Brown would record a kill on the next play to give Northeastern its first lead since the score was 2-1 to take a 23-19 lead. Hofstra rallied to within one, but a Ciszek kill gave the Huskies a two-point cushion and an attacking error by the Pride sealed the victory for the Huskies, who took the set 25-22.
Tkachuk recorded a double-double with 26 assists and 12 digs as well as tallying a career-high five blocks. Jillian Robinson matched a career-high of seven blocks and Neubeck posted a game-high 21 digs.
The Huskies return to action Friday, November 6 taking on UNC Wilmington at Solomon Court at 5 p.m.
