The Northeastern University women's basketball team will open the 2009-10 season against the defending NCAA champion Connecticut Huskies, head coach Daynia La-Force Mann announced Monday as part of her non-conference schedule release.

The Huskies will make the trip to Storrs, Conn., to play Connecticut on Saturday, Nov. 14. The UConn Huskies went 39-0 last season en route to their sixth national championship. This will be Northeastern's 14th all-time game against Connecticut, the last coming during the 1995-96 season.

"What better way to start our season than against the 2009 NCAA national champions," La-Force Mann said. "Our goal as coaches is to allow our athletes to experience collegiate excellence both on and off the court. Scheduling Connecticut will expose us to a program that is dedicated to success. No matter the outcome, we will walk away with a sense of what it takes to perform at the highest level. I am hopeful that the knowledge gained while competing against one of the nation's best teams will propel us through the rest of our non-conference schedule."

The rest of NU's 2009-10 non-conference schedule consists of regional opponents from six different conferences. Following UConn, the Huskies will travel to Delaware State on Nov. 18. The Huskies will open the home portion of their schedule three days later, Nov. 21, against Rhode Island.

On Nov. 24, Northeastern will renew its rivalry with Boston University, facing the Terriers at Case Gym. The Huskies will then host Army on Nov. 28 and Massachusetts on Dec. 2.

The Huskies will play the next four games on the road. They head to Holy Cross on Dec. 5, Harvard Dec. 9, Hartford Dec. 13 and Marist Dec. 22.

The Huskies will close out their non-conference schedule on Dec. 29 in a home showdown with St. John's. The Huskies played the Big East school last season in New York and will now have the opportunity to host the Red Storm. It will be the 15th time these two teams will square off.
