Tesha Tinsley scored 23 points to lead Northeastern to a 68-58 win over Drexel in an America East women’s basketball game at Cabot Gym on Tuesday.
Lani Lawrence added 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for NU, while Wanda Almengot had 10 points. Mikki Miller and Maureen Michaels netted 16 apiece to lead Drexel. The Huskies won their third straight game to improve to 8-6, 3-1 in conference play. Drexel, which has now lost five of its last six, dropped to 5-7, 2-1.
NU led all night and had a 15-point edge, 52-37, with 8:57 to play. The Dragons rallied to make a game of it, however, going on a 14-4 run. A three-pointer by Heather Scanlan (9 points) capped the spurt and cut the NU lead to five at 56-51 with 4:55 showing. Drexel would not get any closer though as the Huskies answered with five straight points, the first two on a layup by Lawrence and then a decisive three-pointer from Tinsley that made it 61-51 with 2:44 left.
The Huskies jumped out to a 27-11 lead and never trailed. NU’s largest lead of the night was 17, 30-13, coming with 5:09 to go in the first half. Drexel got within 14 at the half, down 36-22. NU came out hot, hitting 14 of 27 field goals (51.9 percent) before intermission, while holding the Dragons to just 37.5 percent shooting (9-24).
It was NU’s fifth straight win over Drexel.
