Tesha Tinsley scored a season-high 28 points, enough to break Northeastern’s career scoring record, to lead the Huskies to a 56-44 win over Hartford in an America East women’s basketball game at Cabot Gym on Thursday. Hartford led 30-25 with 12:42 to go, but Tinsley started a 16-0 NU run with a 15-foot jumper that made her the all-time leading scorer in team history. She surpassed the former mark of 1908 points set by Pam Green (1982-86). Tinsley ended the night with 1922 career points. Tinsley, a senior guard, netted 10 points in the decisive 16-0 run that made it 41-30 Huskies with 7:49 to go. The Huskies extended the lead to as much as 15, up 50-35, with 1:46 to go. NU improved to 10-7, 5-2 in America East play, with its fifth win in its last six games. Hartford had a two-game win streak stopped and fell to 8-7, 3-4. Lani Lawrence added nine points for the Huskies. Dorcas Miller topped Hartford with nine points. The Huskies had an early 9-6 lead with 12:19 to go in the first half, but then went into a 9:28 scoring drought. Hartford took advantage, going on a 13-0 run to stake a 19-9 edge, the Hawks’ largest of the night, with 3:38 left before intermission. The Huskies scored the last four points of the half and went into the break down 19-13. It was NU’s lowest point total in a half this season. The Huskies had 16 turnovers at the half, while Hartford committed 14. Tinsley scored the first six points of the second half to tie the game at 19 with 17:41 left, but Harvard answered with a 7-0 spurt for a 26-19 advantage with 14:59 to go. The Hawks couldn’t solve Tinsley who went on to score 16 more points, finishing with 22 second-half points and leading NU to the comfortable win. It was the Huskies’ fourth straight over Hartford. Tinsley added seven rebounds and two assists. She is now just four assists shy of breaking the school record for career assists of 418 held by Desiree Clagon (1981-85).
