Tesha Tinsley scored 21 points, including the 2000th of her career, to lead Northeastern to a 63-45 win over Towson in an America East women’s basketball game at Cabot Gym on Thursday. Tinsley, who entered the game with 1998 points, became the first player in Northeastern women’s basketball history to reach the milestone and just the eighth America East player ever to accomplish the feat. Tinsley, a 5’6 senior guard out of Baltimore, also had six assists and seven rebounds against the America East team from just outside her hometown. NU improved to 13-9 and 8-4 in conference play with its third win the last four games. Towson is now 0-6 on the road in league games and fell to 6-15 overall, 4-9 in America East. Towson jumped out to a 9-0 lead with 16:13 left in the first half as the Huskies missed their first seven shots from the field. Tinsley’s 10-foot jumper with 15:14 left gave her 2000 points and sparked a 25-7 NU run over the next 11 and a half minutes that gave the Huskies a 25-16 edge with 4:46 left in the first half. The teams traded baskets the rest of the half and NU took a 29-20 lead into intermission. The Huskies started the second half with a 13-6 surge to give them a 42-26 edge with 13:06 left. Tinsley had six points and a pair of assists in the run. Towson started pressing and used a 9-2 spurt to cut the NU lead to nine, trailing 44-35 with 7:54 showing. The Tigers got no closer as the Huskies solved the pressure and rebuilt their advantage to a comfortable 16 points after a Tinsley jumper made it 57-41 with 3:16 left. NU’s final 18-point edge was their largest of the game. Lani Lawrence finished with nine points and 13 rebounds for the Huskies. Michele Lanigan paced Towson with 12 points, while Shniece Perry netted 10 to go with eight boards and three steals. It was NU’s fourth straight win over Towson and its sixth in the teams’ last seven meetings. The Huskies held the Tigers to just 33.9 percent field goal shooting and have now won 27 of their last 30 games when holding their opponent under 40 percent.
