Tesha Tinsley scored a season-high 33 points, 23 in the second half, to lead the Huskies to a key America East win at Hartford on Saturday. The victory gives NU sole possession of fourth place with a 9-6 conference record. Hartford dropped to 8-7 in America East play.
With the game tied at 50 and 4:41 left, Tinsley scored NU's next 12 points to keep the Huskies ahead. After Cheri Eleazer made a free throw to cut the NU edge to 62-60 with 49 seconds left, NU freshman Garrette Glinton was fouled with seven seconds to go. The Husky freshman made one of two for a three-point advantage and the Hawks failed in their final attempt to tie the game.
The Huskies had a 26-23 lead at halftime and never trailed after intermission. The Hawks kept it tight with NU's lead growing only as large as seven after a Tinsley jumper made it 40-33 with 11:42 to go. Tinsley was NU's only offense down the stretch. Junior center Lani Lawrence was in foul trouble and eventually picked up her fifth personal with just two points in 21 minutes of action. Wanda Almengot helped pick up the scoring load by matching a season-high with 13 points.
There were five lead changes in the first half. Kenitra Johnson's jumper gave Hartford its last advantage, up 21-20 with 3:08 to go in the first half. Glinton scored to put NU ahead for good and start a 6-2 run that closed the half with the Huskies ahead 26-23.
