America East Championship Semifinal #1
BURLINGTON, VT -- Northeastern lost to top seed Vermont 69-56 on Friday in the semifinals of the 2000 America East Championship at UVMās Patrick Gym. Tesha Tinsley had an amazing game in her final appearance as a Husky. Despite a nagging knee injury suffered last night in the quarterfinals, Tinsley netted a game-high 32 points and the 5ā6 guard added nine rebounds. NU was down just 34-30 at the half, but UVM started the second half with a 12-2 run to open a 46-34 edge with 14:07 left. NU got no closer than 11 the rest of the way. Tinsley finished her brilliant career with 2187 points. She is NUās all-time leader in scoring, assists, steals, field goals, three-pointers and minutes.

America East Rookie of the Year Morgan Hall scored 20 points to lead UVM. Vermont used 9-12 shooting to jump out to 20-10 lead just eight minutes into the contest. But the Huskies rallied and a Garrette Glinton bucket tied it at 26 with just over four minutes before halftime. After the break, the Cats, behind five points by Karalyn Church (16 points on 7-10 FGs) and four by Hall, opened with a 17-2 blitz against the defending champion Huskies.

"We really stepped it up in the second half and defensively the players made some nice adjustments," commented Vermont Coach Keith Cieplicki on his team's effort. "We didn't have any answers for (Tesha) Tinsley- which is a credit to her- but I thought overall our team defense with some big rebounds in the second half helped us take control of the game."

In addition to Hall and Church, Libby Smith added 13 points and nine rebounds as the Catamounts (24-5) shot 52 percent from the floor. Vermont advances to the title game for the fourth time in the last five years and the eighth in the last ten.

"Vermont was a better basketball team tonight," NU Coach Joy Malchodi said. "We were very concerned about their spurts and they had one early in the second half. We had the score right where we wanted it in the first half. A nice low score. They stepped up the offense and pressure in the second half."

Added Tinsley, "I felt that we had a chance to come out in the first five minutes of the second half and maybe even take a lead. We went into the locker room with confidence."

For the second straight night, Tinsley ended the half with a basket. Her 12th point of the first half on a jumper from the top cut the UVM edge to 34-30 at the break.

Tinsley and Wanda Almengot broke the Husky record for consecutive games played in Friday's game. Neither player missed a game in their NU careers, playing in 115 straight to snap the mark of Joanne Healy.
