It was the first appearance of the season for the Huskies, who have a new head coach, Willette White. NU looked impressive from the outset, taking the lead for good with 8:22 left to go in the first half on one of Caruso's four three-pointers. That made the score 14-13 and the Huskies never looked back. NU built a 31-24 edge at halftime as Caruso had 10 points and was 3-3 from beyond the three-point arc.
The Huskies outscored the Netherlands 19-12 over the first 10:39 of the second half and built their largest lead of the afternoon, 50-36, with 9:21 left. The Netherlands, on a two-week U.S. tour, refused to quit, however. The National Team surged back with an 11-1 run that cut NU's edge to four, 51-47, with 3:46 to play. Lawrence, who had nine of her 13 points after intermission, made a jumper and a free throw to increase the Husky advantage back to a comfortable seven with 1:38 left. The Netherlands got no closer than the game's final margin, which was created when Laura Kooij made a layup with less than a second showing.
Freshmen Aisha Williams, Melissa Kowalski and Joi Jefferson all had strong debuts for the Huskies. Williams started at the point and hit a three-pointer, Kowalski netted a pair of treys and had six boards, while Jefferson scored nine points and added six rebounds.
The Huskies will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 14 in an exhibition game against the Nor'easter Storm. It will be the Huskies' final tuneup before the regular season opener at Cabot Gym againt Brown on Nov. 20.
