Kowalski made 4-7 three-point attempts and added eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. Another freshman, point guard Aisha Williams, added 12 points and four assists. Senior captain Lani Lawrence finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, despite playing only eight first-half minutes because of foul trouble.
NU led just 27-26 at the half, but used a 13-0 run to start the second half and build a 40-26 edge with 15:11 left. The Storm, a traveling team consisting of former college players, got no closer than nine the rest of the way. Lawrence had a pair of baskets and Kowalski, Williams, and Genny Caruso each had a three-pointer to provide the decisive 13-point surge.
It was a sloppy game throughout as the teams combined for 56 turnovers. Still, the team of first-year head coach Willette White looks as though it has the talent to contend in America East with a depth-filled bench of talent. Even with veterans Lawrence and Caruso on the bench with two fouls in the first half, newcomers Kowalski, Williams and Joi Jefferson provided quality minutes.
NU had an 11-4 edge, but the Storm rallied to tie the game at 17 with an 11-6 run. Laurie Harris hit a jumper to make it 19-17 with six minutes left in the first half and the Huskies never trailed again.
The Huskies, winners of both their preseason games, will open the regular season on Monday, Nov. 20 at Cabot Gym against Brown. NU played its home opener against the Bears last year and won 68-45. Tipoff will be at 7 p.m.
