Sophomore Barbara Maloni scored 30 points to lead Brown to an 80-69 come-from-behind win at Northeastern in a Div. I women's basketball game at Solomon Court on Monday night.

Brown, which trailed by as much as 12 in the first half, outscored the Huskies 48-30 after intermission to record its first win of the season and improve to 1-1. NU, winners in nine of 10 previous meetings with Brown, was playing its season opener. Three other Brown players scored in double figures as Rada Pavichevich had 19, Nyema Mitchell 15 and Tara Williams 10. Genny Caruso and Melissa Kowalski each had 14 points to lead the Huskies. Caruso also added 12 rebounds for her first career double-double. Mitchell had a game-high 13 rebounds for a double-double.

The Huskies led 55-47 with 11:01 left, but the Bears went on a 10-4 run to cut the Husky edge to two, 59-57, with 7:34 showing. Caruso made a pair of free throws to put NU up 61-57, before Maloni started a decisive surge for the Bears. She hit a three-pointer with 7:11 left to start a 19-2 run that gave Brown a 76-63 lead with only 1:33 left. Maloni had 10 points in the run that put Brown ahead to stay. The Huskies were 1-7 from the floor and commited six of their 27 turnovers in the drought. Brown had 15 points off NU turnovers in the second half alone.

NU shot just 35.5 percent in the second half, while Brown made 53.1 percent from the floor. Senior captain Lani Lawrence had eight points and 12 rebounds for NU. Kowalski, a freshman, had a rough shooting night (5-18), but provided 14 points. Another freshman, Aisha Williams finished with 12 for the Huskies.

NU came out hot behind the play of Williams who had 10 points in the first half as the Huskies took a 39-32 lead at the break. Brown took its first lead of the game with 9:21 to go in the first half as Pavichevich hit a three-pointer to make it 18-17. Lori Newsome's jumper put the Huskies ahead again and sparked a 14-2 run that gave NU a 31-20 edge with 4:40 left in the first half. Caruso's three-pointer gave the Huskies their largest lead of the game, 39-27, with 1:22 to go before halftime. The Bears scored the last five points of the half to cut the deficit to seven at the half.

Brown had lost five straight to the Huskies. The Bears' last win over NU came during the 1993-94 season. The game was the debut of NU's first-year head coach Willette White.
