Kiarsha Curtis made a driving shot with 2.7 seconds left to break a tie and lift Northeastern to a 59-57 win over New Hampshire in an America East women’s basketball game at Solomon Court.
The Huskies (5-6, 1-1) trailed 56-55 after Kelly Donohue’s layup gave UNH (3-9, 1-2) its final lead of the night with 1:56 to play. Curtis answered for NU with a 19’ jumper from the top to make it 57-56 with 1:04 remaining. After Taylore Jarvis made one of two free throws for the Wildcats to tie the game at 57 with 1:04 showing, Curtis missed a short shot at the other end and Donohue grabbed the rebound. UNH had a possession to take the lead, but Curtis intercepted a pass from the Wildcats’ Kiki Proctor to set up her dramatic shot. It was UNH’s 25th turnover of the game. NU finished with 27 of its own.
Freshman Melissa Kowalski led the Huskies with a game-high 21 points, while Curtis finished with 14. Donohue topped the Wildcats with 20 points and Heidi Plencner added 13. Maren Matthias had 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench for UNH.
NU led 31-11 after Kowalski made a three-pointer with 5:52 left before halftime. But the Wildcats outscored the Huskies 13-3 to close out the half and trailed 34-24 at intermission. UNH kept up the pressure in the second half, starting the frame with a 20-7 surge to take the lead for the first time as Proctor’s three-pointer gave the Wildcats a 44-41 edge with 9:31 left. In all, UNH’s run was 33-10 in a 16:21 span after it was down 31-11 to start the game.
After Proctor gave UNH the advantage, the teams traded the lead six times and had three ties the rest of the way before Curtis’s shot bounced around the rim and fell in with just under three seconds left. Proctor had one last fling from just short of halfcourt, but could not get the attempt off before time expired.
