Tracy Guerrette had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds for Maine but her three-point shot bounced off the rim and was rebounded by NU’s Lani Lawrence, who ran out the last two seconds. It was the fourth straight win for the Huskies as they improved to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in America East play. Maine dropped to 4-9, 1-4.
NU led just 61-59 with 1:15 left, but the Huskies’ Kiarsha Curtis made a layup and was fouled for a four-point edge with 1:07 to go. Curtis got her own rebound off a missed foul shot and then fed Laurie Harris for a layup that put NU up 65-59 with 47 seconds showing.
Julie Veilleux (13 points) banked in a three-pointer for the Black Bears to make it a three-point game, 65-62, with 32 seconds left. Lawrence then made one of two free throws before Guerrette hit a driving layup to cut the NU edge to two 66-64 with only 15 seconds on the clock. Kowalski sank the second of two free throws, setting the stage for Guerrette’s final three-point try.
Heather Ernst scored a game-high 17 points for the Black Bears. Harris finished with 10 points for the Huskies, while Lawrence also had 10 to go with 12 rebounds. It was Lawrence’s fourth double-double in the past five games.
The Huskies jumped out to leads of 7-0 and 10-2 before the visitors used an 11-5 run to cut the NU edge to two, 15-13, with 11:14 left before halftime. The teams traded baskets for several minutes until the Huskies went on a 10-0 run to open a 29-18 edge with 5:23 left in the first half. NU built the lead to 12, its largest of the afternoon, going up 31-19 with 4:45 to go. Maine outscored the Huskies 8-2 the rest of the half to trail 33-27 at intermission.
Maine starter Kizzy Lopez committed two fouls in the first 1:23 of the game and sat out the rest of the half. She played just 13 minutes in the game and fouled out with 2:08 left. Lawrence was also limited by foul trouble in the first half, sitting out the final 12:40 before the break with two personals.
NU has now won five of its last six meetings with Maine.
